Martijn van Duivenboden was on his way to an amazing career when leukemia got him. Although he won the battle, the war was far from over. Every time Martijn thought he was getting better another complication showed up. Eventually he was told he would never work again. This story – the heartfelt tale of his life in dire times – is captured in Carrièrepatiënt (Career Patient).

I designed the book cover. An honor because years ago, when I was still a bartender, Martijn van Duivenboden happened to be my boss.

Assignment

The name of this book, Dutch for Career Patient, perfectly sums up how Martijn van Duivenboden went from a great career to being a full-time hospital patient.

He wanted a cover to showcase this.

Let the story speak

As a writer I know good stories don't need to be embellished. This book is no different. It didn't need a crazy cover to get your attention, but a design showing what would readers would find in the book's pages.

The endless hospital beds visualize Martijn's journey of the last couple of years.
